Possibly the best value 1er cru Chablis on the market, made by the Michaut family from grapes grown on the Beauroy slopes. This is beautifully fresh, minerally Chardonnay that is just calling out for grilled fish, shellfish or, as Le Guide Hachette des Vins recommends, snails and butter. A bargain.

The Press
‘Top 3 Chablis Premier Cru.’—Andrew Neather, Evening Standard

‘The premier cru vineyards of Beauroy lie to the north west of the town of Chablis. This is a strikingly good-value example, with a leesy (sic) roundness and texture. It retains the classic Chablis steel, is well balanced, and shows citrus, appley fruit.’— Wine of the Month, Decanter Magazine, February 2010

‘Good golden fruit, good substance too, the fruit buoyed up on the palate by all that oak as well. A nice midpalate texture, attractive, a touch honeyed, and a nicely defined finish….a good wine.’ 16+/20 — Chris Kissack, Wine Doctor
Our tasting notes
Yellow straw color with aromas of honey, lemon and a very slight hint of oak. Rich and full but with all the dry, flinty minerality that one expects from a really good 1er Cru Chablis. The citric flavours and minerality remain prominent over a very long finish. Delicious.

About Chablis:
The name Chablis is synonymous with dry white wine as Champagne is with sparkling wine. The region has the two elements that make great wines—the ‘terroir’ and the climate. The ‘terroir’ in Chablis is Kimmeridgian and Portlandian limestone—a prehistoric deposit of fossils & oyster shells which give the wines their minerality and green grass complex flavour.

The Climate in Chablis is cold and has a long growing season for its Chardonnay grapes (it is 100 miles north of Beaune, the Burgundian capital of Chardonnay that also benefits from the same cold climate/long growing season).

The Classification within Chablis is very carefully regulated—the very best wines from one hill overlooking Chablis are ‘Grand Cru’ and their wines rank among the World’s finest white wine, Les Clos being perhaps the best known. The next level are 1er Cru—from the slopes of other hills and villages within the Chablis region—some of the best are Vaillons, Fourchame, Beauroy and Vau du Vey. This is where the best value for money Chablis are to be found. Beneath the 1er cru is Chablis itself and Petit Chablis both of which can produce respectable wine but at a lower price.

The photo to the right shows the burning of the vine cuttings, a process used in the winter to dispose of the pruned cuttings.
