Domaine les Grands Bois Cuvée Maximilien Cairanne | Côtes du Rhône–Villages

2010

Full bodied, spicy wine from Cairanne—described by Jancis Robinson as ‘probably the best of the Côtes du Rhône–Villages’, in her magisterial Oxford Companion to Wine. This tiny, family owned estate has developed a reputation for producing stunning, opulent wines that are invariably excellent value. This wine is now exceptional.

The Press

“As readers have undoubtedly noted from previous reports on southern Rhones and best values, Domaine Les Grands Bois's proprietor, Marc Besnardeau, is at the top of his game, producing a bevy of wines that represents great value and over-delivers in every category. It seems like whatever Besnardeau fashions is well above its humbe pedigree and modest price. These 2009s and 2010s are the estate's finest effort since the brilliant 2007s.”—Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate

‘Grenache and Mouvedre bolstered by Syrah and Carrigan this is a wine loaded with the appeal of Southern France. The fruit is red, crunchy, spicy and tarry with a good shake of pepper too. The brezzy, frequent Grenache fruit returns with a bang on the finish. A vibrant brash wine.’ —Decanter Magazine

‘92 points... [This wine] displays the most saturated colour (deep ruby/purple) as well as ample blackberry, fresh mushroom, new saddle leather, and meat juice-like aromas. The complex aromatics are followed by a full bodied, powerful, well-delineated Cairanne with plenty of tannin. It is capable of lasting 7-8 years.’ —Robert Parker, Wine Advocate

‘Copious aromas of underbrush, loamy soil, sweet kirsch, black currants and spice box are followed by a spicy, peppery wine with excellent fruit, intensity and density as well as a medium to full-bodied style.’ —Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
Our tasting notes
Steady colour with tints of purple, an intense nose with ripe red fuit notes including berries, raspberries wild strawberries and a hint of pepper. A soft attack, good strength, mellow tannins which allow fruity and spicy notes to develop. Long and fleshy on the palate. Best with game and grilled red meats.

About Cairanne

Regarded by many as the best of the Côtes du Rhône–Villages, Cairanne has become renowned for its full-bodied, fruity wines with hints of black pepper spice. Located east of the village of Orange near to the banks of the Rhône with a Mediterranean climate, it is perfect for ripening the Grenache, Mourdevre and Syrah grapes, which make up the majority of the reds. Much of the soil in the area is limestone and alluvial types and a red iron-rich soil over a sandstone bedrock. The twenty Côtes du Rhône–Villages of the southern Rhône represent a distinct step-up in both quality and value from generic Côtes du Rhône.
