The Press
‘I’m not a fan of the stereotypical red picnic wine, Beaujolais, but Michele et Francois Descombes Beaujolais Vieilles Vignes 2010 is more serious: bags of cherry fruit with appealing chewy tannin’— Andrew Neather, Evening Standard
Our tasting notes
Bright red berry colour with slightly floral and cherry notes on the nose. The palate is round and juicy with good concentration. Bags of cherries and raspberries, a hint of spice and great fresh acidity. The perfect easy drinking wine for summer.

About Beaujolais
Beaujolais, quantitatively, is an extremely important wine region in France, producing in some years more than the whole of Burgundy put together. It is renowned for its fruit-driven, juicy red wines produced from the Gamay grape, which are the very antithesis of the powerful, high alcohol, barrel-matured reds so often considered the height of fashion.

Its reputation has suffered slightly over the last few decades as a result of the infamous Beaujolais Nouveau and the mass produced, anemic wines so often found in supermarkets. However great quality and diversity is to be found amongst the smaller producers.

About half of all Beaujolais is sold under the basic appellation Beaujolais, which comes from the flatter, lower land in the region. Higher up, in the hillier north are the Beaujolais-Villages, which represent a significant qualitative step up. Within this finer northern sector there are the 10 Crus with their own appellations. These include St Amour, Fleurie, Morgon and Moulin-à-Vent.
