Cascina Chicco, ‘Granera Alta’
Barbera d’ Alba DOC
2009
A lovely, lush Barbera from Cascina Chicco, one of Piedmont’s top producers. Unlike many of its Piemontese kin the barbera grape produces wines that are forward and can be enjoyed a year or two after bottling. This example, made from vines on clay and limestone soil, is drinking perfectly now and is an excellent food wine. A bargain at under £12 a bottle.

About Barbera d’ Alba
Barbera, once known as the “the people’s wine” in Piedmont, is Italy’s third most planted dark-berried vine, after Sangiovese and Montepulciano. Most famously produced in the DOC zones of Alba and Asti these wines are much more forward than the Nebbiollo-based wines from neighbouring Barbaresco and Barolo. They tend to have light tannins, ripe fruit and good acidity making them fabulous food wines and a staple on any Italian restaurants wine list.
