“Maltus makes his wines in St-Emilion, the lovely hill town inland from Bordeaux, with love and dedication. All of them have a stateliness, an elegance combined with rich, juicy flavours. The offer comes from the highly successful online merchants FromVineyardsDirect.

La Reserve 2008 (£8.95) is their house Claret. I’ve often compared a decent red Bordeaux to the sitting room in a gentleman’s club: aromas of smoke, leather and the cedary savour of a cigar tube. This has it in spades. Maltus’s next level up is the Château Teyssier 2007 (£14.95), a lovely example of Merlot, soft but with a fine, robust flavour.

Finally, the superb Château Laforge, one of the best Bordeaux I have drunk for some time. The 2007 (£25.95) is delicious, but the 2001 (£29.95) is already exceptional, packed with gorgeous dark flavours—cherries, damsons, the whiff of a forest. I have had worse grands crus classés at many times the price.”
