Lacrimus Crianza, Rioja

2005

Wonderfully made, modern Rioja from the highly-rated wine maker, Javier Gonzales, at the family owned Bodegas Sendero Royal. Aged for two years, with six months in French oak, this rich and complex wine is already starting to drink very well and will last at least another five. Great value for a serious Rioja.

The Press
‘Racy Rioja with a silky texture, excellent balance, and a lively, long finish. Aside from its intrinsic qualities, it is also an excellent value for drinking over the next eight years. (91 Points).’—Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate
Our tasting notes
Dark cherry-red with garnet hues. Very intense and complex nose, with an initial waft of spicy and balsamic aromas against a background of ripe fruit. Round and unctuous with ripe tannins and notes of liquorice, oak and spice. A wonderful companion for stews, red meat and game.

About Rioja
The leading wine region of Spain, predominantly producing Tempranillo based reds in the North East of the country. It is divided into three zones along the axis of the river Ebro: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa, which falls in the Basque province of Alava, and Rioja Baja.

Rioja’s wine industry developed after the Christian reconquest in the 15th Century and grew up around the monasteries established for pilgrims en route to Santiago de Compostella. Excluding a brief period at the turn of the twentieth century when phylloxera destroyed vast swathes of vines, the region of Rioja has gone from strength to strength and in 1991 was promoted from DO to DOC.

The black, indigenous tempranillo grape is ubiquitous throughout the region, thriving as it does on clay and limestone soils of the Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. Grenache, Mazuelo (Carignan), Cabernet Sauvignon and Graciano are also found.
