Château Larrivet-Haut-Brion | Pessac-Léognan

1998 (in wooden cases)

We have just managed to secure a tiny parcel of this wonderful, 12 year old white Bordeaux at a fantastic price. Château Larrivet-Haut-Brion lies next to Château Haut-Bailly in Pessac-Léognan, top white Graves territory, and boasts Michel Rolland as its oenologist.

White Bordeaux of this maturity and quality are incredibly rare, and it is an exceptional vinous treat to drink. It is showing no sign of tiring yet, so it should have a few years to go in tip top condition. It is remarkable value for money—the 2009 is selling for over £30 a bottle duty paid.

The Press
‘Lovely waxy, honeyed-but-dry-finishing, classic old dry white Bordeaux. Edge of ashiness. This is decidedly not for neophytes. You need to have tasted some young, lanolin-scented, sometimes rather oily, dry white Bordeaux to appreciate how this wine has matured and taken on so much more interest and balance. Well done, FVD, for shining the spotlight on this unique style of wine and for locating such a haunting, mature example of it. A far from truculent teenager...’ 17/20, Jancis Robinson MW

“A top notch 1998 dry white wine from Graves and Pessac-Leognan that should rate 90 points or above”—Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate
Our tasting notes
It is pale golden in colour and has fabulous dry fruit flavours of lemons, peaches and tropical fruits. Lovely waxy notes and a long, lingering finish. Superb wine at its peak.

About Château Larrivet-Haut-Brion
The property was given its current name, Château Larrivet-Haut-Brion, in 1949 by Jacques Guillemaud who managed the estate until 1982.

The Château was then acquired by the Gervoson family in 1987. They restored the estate’s unity, once again combining the château, outbuildings, 13 hectares of grounds, and 42 hectares of vines under one owner, as well as replanting 18 hectares of land that had laid fallow.

Under this new ownership, and with Michel Rolland as oenologist, the estate has regained its reputation as one of the top estates in Pessac, producing predominantly red wine but also some excellent white Graves.
