The Loire Valley Mixed Case
The River Loire flows for 700 miles and encompasses a wide variety of grapes and appellations from Muscadet in the West to Sancerre in the East.
The French refer to it as 'The Garden of France' but it is more than that. It produces probably the best value, quality wines from any major wine growing area on the planet—for instance Muscadet, which Robert Parker describes as 'The World’s Greatest white wine value.'
The Loire is principally known for its dry, grassy white wines made from Sauvignon, for which Sancerre is the most illustrious appellation around. While the ever underrated, and under-priced, reds are made from Gamay, Pinot Noir (Sancerre) but predominantly Cabernet Franc, which produces very perfumed wines with summery flavours of raspberries, blackcurrants and violets.
WHITE
3 bottles Domaine Octavie Sauvignon Touraine 2010A wonderful, fresh, aromatic Sauvignon from Isabelle and Noe Roubally, who produce very high quality wines in small quantities and with a minimal use of artificial fertilisers and pesticides.
3 bottles Comte Leloup de Chasseloir Muscadet Sèvre et Maine sur Lie 2005
Made from 100-year-old vines by Bernard Carré with grapes all meticulously picked by hand and aged with their 'lees' to give richness and body. Very different to ordinary Muscadet and shows what a very good wine Muscadet can be. "As I have written before, that one can savour a wine with such complexity and from ungrafted hundred year old vines for $20 is remarkable and I cannot imagine what any readers who have not already had the experience are waiting for. 92 points."—Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate
3 bottles Domaine Bernard Fleuriet Sancerre 2008
The Fleuriet family run their vineyard as they should—with their grapes being picked by hand. The result is a very fine Sancerre. Ideal by itself or with most cheeses—Chèvre especially—and seafood.
RED
3 bottles Domaine Bernard Fleuriet Sancerre Rouge 2008The Fleuriet family’s red, produced in very small quantities—the locals rate it the best red Sancerre in their region. This is a very refreshing serious Pinot Noir made from old vines that has lots of body and structure.
