Rosso del Palazzone | Montalcino

NV

The follow on to our incredibly popular ‘baby brunello’. This new blend of vintages (2005 and 2008—both fabulous vintages) from the excess production of Il Palazzone’s Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino is even better than the last.

Il Palazzone run under the guidance of renowned oenologist Paolo Vagaggini, has picked up numerous accolades and is now considered one of the very finest of the Brunello producers. The Rosso has all the rich and complex flavours of a Brunello but for less than a third of the price—it is a stunning bargain and ideal for drinking over the next 7-8 years.

The Press
‘It is pure Sangiovese with a hint of the warmth of this corner of south-eastern Tuscany—much lusher than the average Chianti—but without any excesses of oak or alcohol. The wines, made with oenologist Paolo Vagaggini, are aged in varying sizes of cask. I would happily drink this any time over the next two years and would pat myself on the back for having found such an honest, pleasurable message in a bottle from Tuscany. It keeps well in an opened bottle for several days, by the way (a good sign that it migrated from tasting to dining table in my house).’ —Jancis Robinson MW, June 2009
Our tasting notes
Deep purple with a rich fruit and spice driven nose. Very intense, concentrated ripe fruit with a hints of spice and tobacco. The flavours linger in a very long finish. Ideal for stews, red meat and game. High class wine.

About Brunello di Montalcino
Produced in the fairly arid vineyards surrounding the Tuscan town of Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino has long been thought of as one of Italy’s most prestigious wines. It is made from a ‘superior clone’ of the Sangiovese grape, Sangiovese Grosso, and in 1980 it was awarded the first Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) designation.

According to current DOCG regulations Brunello di Montalcino wines cannot be released until five years after harvest, during which time they must be aged in oak for a minimum of 2 years and spend at least 4 months in bottle.

Brunello di Montalcino wines generally have a hearty and meaty nose, followed by big, rich fruit flavors which can be plumy or perfumed, and woody tannins. They also tend to have great aging potential..
