Château Peyrabon | Haut-Médoc, Cru Bourgeois

2004

A really good Cru Bourgeois where the vines grow on sandy gravel. This property owned by the Bernard family is an example of how to make fabulous claret using great terroir combined with the latest in traditional modern technology (minimal intervention—for example vertical wine presses which are gentle and rely on gravity). The wines from Château Peyrabon win awards whenever they are shown. Their 2004 is no exception.

Our tasting notes
Deep, dark ruby, almost purple with powerful black fruit, jammy aromas. Rich claret through and through with good concentration, balance and an excellent finish. Drinking really well and will continue to improve. Claret to follow. Excellent value for money and a wine that you would hope that every good French restaurant would have on its list.

About Cru Bourgeois
The Cru Bourgeois are those Médoc properties that just failed to make the cut in the 1855 Classification of Classified Growths which graded just over 60 wines in the Médoc into 1st—5th growths based purely on the market price they were fetching at the time. Today this Classification, whilst remaining a guideline, is full of obvious anomalies. The better Cru Bourgeois should be included as classified growths but this would take the equivalent of an Act of Parliament in France and would be fought tooth and nail by those on the way down!
