Talented producer Pietro Catelli makes his wines exclusively from indigenous Italian grape varieties, ensuring that the wines best express the areas in which they are grown. This wine from Puglia, the heel of Italy, is full bodied, rich and packed with character.

Our tasting notes

Deep ruby colour with flecks of strawberry-fuchsia when it’s young. Scents of wild blackberry and raspberry together with hints of violets, chocolate, tobacco and spices. Great structure and softness, with a finish that goes on and on.

About Puglia

The southern portion of the region that forms the characteristic heel of the Italian “boot”. Apulia is the longest and one of the most fertile regions in the south of Italy and not surprisingly largest producer of wine in Italy. Boasting a Mediterranean climate, exceptional soil for growing grapes (a calcareous base overlain by topsoil rich in oxide) and fifty different indigenous grape varieties Apulia is a producers dream.

The variety most commonly associated with the region is Primitivo. Primitivo and Zinfandel have the same DNA, therefore the European Community allows the producers to label the wine with either name on the labels. It's unknown how the varietal arrived to Apulia, some think it came from Croatia, others think from Portugal or France. The best conditions to grow Primitivo are in the Salento peninsula (the area from Taranto to Brindisi to Lecce up to the eastern city of Otranto). The wind that blows in the Peninsula keeps the vines healthy and prevents the formation of mould. The high alcohol content, the intense fruity flavours (in particularly of spiced blackberry) make this varietal very appealing.
