Castello di Potentino ‘Sacromonte’
Montecucco Rosso
2005
An excellent Tuscan red from a small, family estate owned by Graham C Greene that is really causing a real stir in the Italian wine world. Made by the highly talented Charlotte Horton from 100% Sangiovese—it is wonderfully floral, spiced and elegant, as all really good Sangiovese should be.
The Press
‘Avoid the disappointing High Street Chiantis and, instead, head to the web for 2005 Castello di Potentino, ‘Sacromonte’...This Tuscan gem has an earthy nose and hints of liquorice.’ — Amelia Pinsent, Country Life ‘On the palate this is quite serious, grown-up stuff, the sinewy tannins wrapped around earthy, tight black fruit and a keen acidity adding to the chewy, food-friendly character. Ideal with lamb shanks or other robust dishes.’ — The Wine Gang ‘100% Sangiovese from Tuscany. Lots of red cherry fruit and spice. The palate is balanced and fresh and wrapped with more ripe red fruit characters and hint of coffee on the finish.’ — Decanter Magazine ‘...a Tuscan wine made entirely from Sangiovese. This is quite serious stuff for under a tenner, and although it is drinking well now it will be even better with age. It is savoury, spicy and mineral with flavours of burnt cherry fruit and distinct notes of fennel.’—Mike Tipping, The York Press ‘My friend brought me back a bottle of this deeply obscure Tuscan red from holiday; I was overjoyed to find that it is now available here from the excellent website FromVineyardsDirect. This is made from 100 per cent Sangiovese, but streets ahead of any Chianti at this price: full, rich, expressive, with a fine minerality. Lovely.’— Andrew Neather, Evening Standard ‘The palate starts off quite nicely, polished and linear, with good acidity carrying it through to a firm finish. It has substance, but its structure means that it really needs some food. Some really good points here! 16/20.’— Chris Kissack, Wine Doctor ‘This is a dark, velvety, Sangiovese with succulent sweet fruit and supple oak. Very definitely Sangiovese, but not the dry, astringent school of Tuscan Sangiovese or the jammy new world style. It carries its 14.5% abv effortlessly and is perfect for drinking now, but has plenty of life in it.’— Joanna Simon, www.joannasimon.comOur tasting notes
Ruby coloured with a sweet, slightly perfumed cherry and raspberry nose. Medium bodied and full of gentle fruit with a hint of fennel and spice. Delicious and will improve. Perfect with delicate meats like veal and pork.Wine data
