Domaine Bernard Fleuriet | Sancerre Rouge
2007
The Fleuriet family, who produce our highly acclaimed white Sancerre, are actually most famous for their red Sancerre, which they produce in very small quantities—the locals rate it the best red Sancerre in their region. This is a very refreshing serious Pinot Noir made from old vines that has lots of body and structure.
An excellent, good value alternative to red Burgundy.

Our tasting notes
Pinky raspberry in colour. Crisp, refreshing and with bags of ripe juicy fruit: strawberries, cherries and cassis. Fine silky tannins and wonderful balance. This is a really superb wine. Drink by itself or with charcuterie, pork, game and cheese—particularly Chavignol (the Loire’s most famous cheese made at the village of that name close by the Fleuriet vineyards).Wine data

About Sancerre
The southfacing hills of Sancerre on the left bank of the upper Loire at 600m are most commonly associated with some of the finest, dry Sauvignon Blancs in the world (90% of Sancerre’s production is white wine) but it also produces some fantastic Pinot Noir-based reds and roses. The soil in Sancerre, depending on the location is made up of clay, limestone, Kimmeridgean marl, gravel and flint. The limestone in particular helps to give the reds a mineral crispness that is less common in the Pinot Noirs from Burgundy. The reds are superb served young and are often drunk in France slightly chilled, though they do have the capacity to age and can acquire the same savory notes as mature Burgundies.
