Valsanzo Viña Sanzo | Rueda

2009

A lovely, crisp and floral Verdejo (Spain’s finest white grape variety) that is produced bio-dynamically from 40 years old vines in Rueda, Northern Spain. Robert Parker gave the 2007 vintage 90 points (extraordinary for a wine at this price) and we expect this vintage to do as well. A very distinctive and summery wine which, at this price, represents excellent value for money.

The Press
'Some Verdejo's are pungent lookalikes for Kiwi Sauvignon, but not this: here there's steel at the core of a lime and gently herbal wine, with the palate lean and gripped by a mineral and citrus acidity and just a touch of gooseberry. ' — The Wine Gang

'Made from 40-year-old vines on a property run using biodynamic methods, this is crisp and nervy, with nuances of passion fruit and gooseberry. It's flesy, perky and driven, boasting hints of herbs, citrus zest and a mouthwatering finish. Drink 2010.' — Wine of the Month, Decanter Magazine, January 2010.

BEST VALUE WHITE—'from 40 year old vines on a property run using biodynamic methods, this is crisp and nervy, with nuances of passion fruit and gooseberry. It’s fleshy, perky and driven, boasting hints of herbs, citrus zest and a mouthwatering finish.' — Decanter Magazine

'Herby greengage and almond notes. Refreshing, biodynamic and great value.'
Rose Murray Brown, The Scotsman

Our tasting notes
Pale greeny, golden in colour and a very floral nose with hints of fennel and tropical fruit. Full bodied, dry, concentrated and wondefully aromatic- with flavours of apricots, greengages and a touch of almonds. A very long finish. Delicious.

About Duero
Based in the Castilla y León region around the river Duero this little D.O is renowned primarily for its production of quality white wines made from the Verdejo grape. The valley itself is characterised by its very distinct microclimate, its high altitude and its continental climate, which convey a more expressive and powerful character to the fruit of its vines.

The land is fairly flat lying at about 600m above sea level, whilst the soil, especially closest to the river, is alluvial with a high lime content.

The major grapes here are Verdejo and Tempranillo but Viura, Sauvignon Blanc, Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are also grown.
