Domaine Jean-Paul Schmitt Gewürztraminer Classic | Rittersberg
2007
Lovely organic Gewurtz from highly rated Alsatian producers, Domaine Jean-Paul Schmitt. Robert Parker lists the estate as one of his Top Value Alsatian Producers and we were certainly very impressed when we first tried their wines. A superb example of what Alsace does best—complex, well-balanced and floral whites with a strong sense of terroir.
The Press
‘As a classic example of its grape and region in versatile, food-friendly form one could do a lot worse for the price.’— Robert Parker, The Wine AdvocateOur tasting notes
A golden yellow colour. Very aromatic with fresh lychee flavours and a little spice. A hint of sweetness on the finish but it is so well balanced with the acidity. To be enjoyed either on its own or with rich Alsatian cuisine like goose or, more typically in the UK, with spicy Asian cuisine.Wine data

About Alsace
Alsace lies in the east of France and has been a perennial subject of dispute for both the French and the Germans, changing hands in the C17th, then again in the C19th until it finally became part of France after the first world war. As such it maintains a distinctive character that incorporates both French and German elements. This is reflected in the region’s wines. As in Germany the vast majority of the wine produced is white, 90% in fact. The three ‘noble’ varieties are Pinot Gris, Gewurtztraminer and Riesling, the latter of which is the most ubiquitous in the region. Pinots Blanc and Noir, Muscat, Sylvaner and a few others are also planted. Many producers will grow several of these varieties, however they are normally sold as ‘varietals’ (a wine made from one grape variety) and always bottled in ‘flutes’.
