Casa Catelli | Rosso Di Toscana IGT

2008

A delicious, high quality Super Tuscan from Pietro Catelli at a very un-Super Tuscan price. Produced just by Bolgheri, a region nicknamed ‘the Bordeaux of Tuscany’ and home to two of the most famous Super Tuscans, Sassicaia & Ornellaia. Aged for 14 months in French oak barrels, this rich, complex wine is a must for all lovers of Tuscan reds. Already drinking well now but it will go on improving for the next few years. The wine is astounding value.

The Press
‘Superb offering from my favourite online site. Comes from an area next to Bolgheri where the Super Tuscans are crafted. Delicious blend of Cabernet and Sangiovese with 14 months in French oak.’—Matthew Nugent, Irish Mail on Sunday

‘Casa Catelli’s excellent Rosso di Toscana is unmistakably Italian. It has slightly sour dark cherries with a little cassis, some savory leather and a green olives, and a hint of chocolate. It’s delicious in other words, and great value.’—David Williams, Observer
Our tasting notes
Dark, concentrated garnet colour. Strong scent of black currant, spice and a hint of bell pepper. Rich and concentrated on the palate with vibrant notes of blueberry and dry prunes, together with leather and tobacco. Lovely long finish. This really should not be under £10 a bottle.

About Super Tuscans & Bolgheri

The term 'Super Tuscan' describes any Tuscan red wine that does not adhere to traditional blending laws. The first wines came about in the 1960s and early 1970s as a result of experimentation by innovative producers like the Antinori family. Sassicaia became the first really successful Super Tuscan when, in 1974, it beat several top Bordeaux wines at a Decanter tastings. It now sells for well over £1,000 a case.

Bolgheri is home to Sassicaia and one of the other top Super Tuscans, Ornellaia, both of which are made by members of the extended Antinori family. Because of its closeness to the sea the region has a more temperate microclimate than in the Tuscan hills, meaning that Bordeaux grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot thrive. The region is now drawing in all sorts of investors, including the famed Piemontese estate, Gaja.
