2019 Lirac 'La Ferme Romaine', Domaine Lafond Roc Epine
Available En Primeur
A similar grape mix to their village Lirac but from older vines in one small plot within the vineyard. After a time in stainless steel tank until the first racking, the wine is aged in new barrels (half with a strong 'toast' and half softer) for 10 months, to soften the tannins, to oxygenate the wine and to bring a touch of vanilla which will blend with the structure of the wine. In the glass, the wine is a strong ruby colour with purple tints. The bouquet is complex with cinnamon, cooked fruits and morello cherry. After a rich and firm attack, the wine shows vanilla and peppery aromas which stay with you for a long finish. Drink peak will be between 2023 and 2029.
Domaine Lafond Roc Epine, named after the Lafond family and a famous race horse (Roquépine) has family winemaking roots going back to 1780 and combines history, old vines and modern techniques. It has been certified organic since 2012. All the grapes in their Lirac are harvested by hand and sorted by eye by the pickers themselves, so the grapes that arrive at the winery are in top condition.
