Saint-Julien once again greets the 2020 En Primeur campaign, this time by way of the iconic 4ème Cru Château Branaire-Ducru, situated in the extreme south of the appellation, just opposite an equally renowned Château Beychevelle.

Appreciated for the left bank’s more ethereal, delicate expressions of cabernet-led cuvées, the region enjoyed a very dry July and August last year through which this star château’s 2020 vintage is rendered a lovely concentration of fruit whilst retaining its typical floral elegance and freshness.

And a star millésime it is, too: with 2020 now poised to complete a triumvirate of historic vintages in Bordeaux, and with yields down 20%, we fully expect another swift, sell-out performance from Branaire-Ducru this year.

With the late owner Patrick Maroteaux’s extensive technical improvements introduced over the past twenty years at the Château, Branaire-Ducru ranks indisputably among Saint-Julien's finest. The 2020 is 70% cabernet sauvignon, 26% merlot, 2% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot, grown in 60 Ha of deep, gravelly soil, having spent 16-20 months in a sensible 60-65% new oak. Fresh raspberry, red currant and graphite abound, with a well-defined, grippy structure that delivers chiselled, sweet and bitter blackberry on the finish.

Critic reviews:
"Blueberry, blackberry, damson and hawthorn, this has juice and tannins with an elegance and really excellent St-Julien character; A lovely Branaire, well placed. Unfussy, this is still not overly exuberant but it has a real sense of sappiness, lift and sinew. 3% Cabernet Franc completes the blend."

"The 2020 Branaire-Ducru displays a deep garnet-purple colour and pronounced blackcurrant cordial, plum preserves and boysenberries scents, plus hints of sautéed herbs, unsmoked cigars and graphite. The medium-bodied palate has a lot of verve, delivering appealing tension among the tightly wound black fruits and grainy tannins, finishing with an herbal lift."
