PRODUCT REVIEWS

‘An absolutely barnstorming wine!’ cried our Buyer, Ben Godfrey, as a bottle of the 2015 Château d’Aiguilhe complimented his Magret de Canard!

It’s telling when a mature vintage punctuates a wine buyer’s 2020 en primeur campaign such that it monopolises discussion time in our morning catch ups over and beyond any of the day’s releases!

It was however the case as we welcomed the release of the latest vintage from this little gem of an estate… part of the portfolio of properties belonging to (arguably) Bordeaux’s most dapper man, Count Stephan von Neipperg (Canon-la Gaffelière, Mondotte, l’Oratoire...)

In 2015, Château d’Aiguilhe had already completed the extensive process of modernisation that has since carried the property from strength to strength and created a wine from that vintage to which 2020 is now being compared. At the moment the 2020 it is still resting in 30% new oak casks, and once bottled and spending another few years of brooding on this issue it will surely provide equal drinking pleasure…. or ‘GLORIOUS”, as Ben’s email had also put it when draining the last his 2015 bottle!

He has ninety hectares of vines that provide what has become the winning formula in 2020 - merlot and cabernet franc on limestone and clay hillsides rising as high as 110 metres at their peaks. It renders intense, expressive, perfumed black fruit also redolent of roasted coffee and exotic spice. Power, opulence, finesse...

Critic reviews:
"The 2020 Château d’Aiguilhe has a nose laden with mulberry, blackberry, allspice and even rooibos scents that lends it a subtle Capelands slant, not necessarily in a bad way. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grip on the entry, offering crunchy black fruit struck through with a silver bead of acidity. Fresh and vibrant, leaving blackberry, tobacco and touches of sour cherry on the aftertaste. There is real joie-de-vivre here."
90-92 pts. Neal Martin, Vinous
