Château Laroque, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé 2020
Available En Primeur
One of our strongest-selling wines for the past two vintages (indeed we ran out of wine very fast indeed both times), nowadays Château Laroque consistently punches – and scores – well above its weight.
David Suire (of Château Beauséjour-Duffau-Lagarosse fame) and the team at Château Laroque have done it again in 2020, with a classy offering that shows all the richness and power of merlot in this right-bank friendly vintage, yet with an impressive freshness, notes of red fruit and a minerality on the finish one would expect to find in much pricier clarets.
Since 2015 M. Suire has been leading the estate in this direction, aiming for an ever-more elegant rendition of the estate’s superb fruit from the St Emilion limestone plateau, and it certainly is paying dividends.
"Deep crimson but not impenetrable. Mellow, rather unflashy nose with well-integrated acidity and a certain mineral element. Really lively and fresh and rather sleeker than some of the more exhibitionistic St-Émilions. Obviously a long-term, and rather exciting, bet. Bone-dry finish and a fair amount of ripe tannin but not lean or drying, and with a persistent, silky finish. Rather sophisticated."
16.5pts, James Lawther MW, www.jancisrobinson.com
"This is really focused and linear with tight, minerally tannins that are polished and energetic. Its medium-to full-bodied with dark and blue fruit in the center palate. Long and focused."
94-95pts, James Suckling
