Ataraxia Chardonnay 2017

Western Cape

75cl bottle: £23.95

Case of 12 75cl bottles: £287.40

We are expecting an arrival of this wine in June.

Consistently one of the stand out Chardonnays from South Africa's growing fraternity of exciting winemakers, the Ataraxia Chardonnay is once again a wine not to be missed this year. Few regions in the world offer such incredible value as the wines of the Cape, rich in ancient soils and with the perfect climatic conditions for growing world class Chardonnay.

This is sublime, Ataraxia's "unapologetically wooded white" wine mirrors the terroir in which the Chardonnay vines are grown. In other words, it is an expression of the low vigour, stony, clay-rich Bokkeveld Shale derived soils and the heavily maritime-influenced climate. This is a chiseled and precise wine which is just delicious. It embraces the very adult tastes of salinity, brininess and minerality, all of which are the hallmarks of the great and classic white wines of the world

Our Tasting Notes

A very elegant, Burgundian-style chardonnay. A mineral acidity is beautifully balanced by a subtle yet compelling intensity of fruit. A classic length, creaminess and intriguing complexity defines this stylish, world class chardonnay. Will pair really well with halibut in butter sauce or roast chicken with delicate herbs.

Ataraxia wines is perfectly positioned on a commanding rise in the beautiful Hemel-en-Aarde wine-growing area. Just a short distance from the coastal village of Hermanus, a picture-perfect drive brings you to the most elevated part of these winelands. Here you can experience jaw-dropping vineyard, valley and mountain views. In addition to its unrelenting beauty, Ataraxia is home to some of the most spectacular terroirs South Africa has to offer. In 2004, the Skyfields Farm was visioned into the Ataraxia wine label when husband and wife, Kevin and Hanli Grant and a few friends purchased this 47-hectare prime vineyard property. More than a decade later, the brand is associated with crafting wines of incredible finesse, balance and depth; wines that proudly hold their own on the international wine stage.

"A lovely pure peach stone nose with white flower notes, creamy but not heavy. Expertly judged oak flows across a wonderfully salty, briny palate. There is just enough biscuity richness, balanced by pithy citrus tang, mineral notes, crunchy acidity and fruit complexity." - 96 Points, Tim Atkin MW, John Hoskins MW, Greg Sherwood MW, Decanter (previous vintage)
