PRODUCT REVIEWS

I have been perplexed for some time now as to why good Brunello di Montalcino, which I regard as Tuscanys finest wine, is overshadowed by so called Super Tuscans. The good news is that, as a result, Brunello remains one of the worlds great value fine wines.

I have also been a big fan of Il Poggiones Brunello for the last 15 or so years. It consistently produces outstanding Brunello and their 2016 is one of the best in what is a great Brunello vintage. The critics agree with Eric Guido of Vinous awarding it 97 points "a classic in the making". I leave you to read his tasting note below.

My heart lies in Bordeaux having made wine there for more than 10 years but along with my friends who are claret lovers, Brunello occupies a special place in our cellars. Although it starts to drink well after 2 years or so in bottle, it ages beautifully and after a few years it develops lovely complex burnt fruit flavours as the oak integrates with the wine.

This wine is due for release from the estate’s cellars in late January 2021.

Critic Review:
"Im not sure how Il Poggione manages to remain one of the largest producers of Brunello, maintaining such a high level of quality and turning out some of the best wines of the vintage year after year - but they do. The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is yet another stunning example. Depths of mineral-encased black cherries, sage, allspice, licorice, tobacco and crushed violets lift up from the glass. Its seamlessly silky, even as the palate is peppered with tart red and black berries, nervous acids and savory exotic spices. This shows the density and weight of the vintage in a youthfully monolithic stance, yet with all the necessary components to maintain perfect balance. The 2016 Il Poggione seems to fold in upon itself through the finish, which is dark, mysterious and structured, with only hints of black tea and licorice to tempt the imagination. Its a classic in the making"
