2014 - GOLD MEDAL Concours de Bordeaux - Aquitaine Wines 2017

Château Bujan lies directly opposite Margaux on the Gironde river and this particular vintage was awarded a Gold Medal in 2017, we tasted then and again in May this year and the wine has only got better with age.

Bujan covers all bases for us, great location with vines grown on south-facing slopes and an exceptional winemaker in Pascal Méli who has learnt to really make his wines sing after 30 years amongst amongst the vines. 2014 was a forward year where merlot was particularly successful. The vintage produced wines that are ripe for drinking now as opposed to the two vintages that followed which are perfect for ageing. (With this particular wine, based on taste, we chose the 2014 over the 2015). The 2014s generally are drinking brilliantly but Bujan in particular bowled us over with its quality at under £14 retail price - this is the perfect affordable, everyday wine to enjoy with supper or indeed, at dinner parties…decant it, leave for an hour and we'll wager a bet that your guests won’t suspect that this is a 2014 Côtes de Bourg.

Our Tasting Notes

The nose is full and well-balanced with a remarkable and enticing freshness along with subtle aromas of ripe fruits. On the palate, there is a delicate oaked influence and the tannins are rich with a slight toasty finish. The wine is made predominantly from merlot with 25% cabernet sauvignon and a splash of cabernet franc. It is then aged for 12 months in barrels, of which a quarter are new barrels each year. Drinking wonderfully now as 2014 is a relatively forward vintage, and the wine will continue to drink well for up to 5 years.

About

Listed in the early Feret guides at the end of the 19th century, this historic property was taken over in 1987 by Marielle and Pascal Meli, who have made significant improvements to the Château Bujan wines. Located in the heart of the Côtes de Bourg appellation, on the hillsides of Gauriac and the other side of the river Gironde from Margaux, the 17 hectares of vines are on the south-facing slopes. Exceptional winegrower, Pascal Méli always gives priority to the finesse and elegance of wine rather than to massive extraction. Reasonable protection of the vineyard and minimum use of plant protection products: there has been no use of insecticide for several years.
