Alan Johnson-Hills Chateau Meaume Reserve du Chateau 2016 is in his rather modest words is ‘one of the best Reserves we have ever made’. Alan only makes his Reserve in the best years from the oldest & best plots in the Meaume vineyards. 2016 was an exceptionally good vintage and it shows in this superb affordable claret that should give at least 10 years of wonderful drinking. This is the bargain of the vintage – buy as much as you can.

Our Tasting Notes

Dark & brooding deep red in colour with a wonderful Merlot nose of rich, ripe fruit with a hint of chocolate. Good concentration, balance with a long finish. This is much more than everyday drinking claret.

Alan's Report on the Vintage

The main feature of the 2016 growing season was the almost total absence of rain from the end of June till after the harvest. Normally a little rain during the summer helps bring on the maturity, but in this case we were able to wait and wait in beautiful September weather, with temperatures up to 30°. Our clay soil retains moisture, so the vines never became stressed in the almost drought conditions which brought suffering to vines on the gravel soils.

After waiting happily and patiently we eventually started the harvest on 3rd October and gently took our time bringing in the grapes at optimum maturity, and in perfect health, until 19th October. This is our latest harvest ever!

The resultant wine is wonderfully dark in colour, packed with fruit and developing a fascinating chocolaty nose. We have selected a special parcel of 100% Merlot old vines to make the 2016 'Reserve du Chateau". This is being specially matured with the finest quality French oak . We are sure that this will be rated as one of the best 'Reserves' we’ve ever made.
