Rasteau Cuvée Marc, Domaine Les Grands Bois 2018
Rasteau, with Cairanne, is very much the best of the 21 Côtes-du-Rhône Villages, and Rasteau has long been a favourite of mine. Richer still, this wine is grenache, syrah and mourvèdre, and will age beautifully.
Marc and Mireille Besnardeau of Domaine Les Grands Bois are fourth generation small family growers who have been organic or biologique since 2011. They were introduced to us by the owner of the best bistro in the village of Cairanne, whose house wines they provide. The family also makes some of the finest, very affordable wines in France.

How does the wine taste?
A big, bold blend of 50% grenache, 25% syrah and 25% mourvèdre that is dark and intense with an intriguing concentration. Lots of sweet and bitter black fruit driven by a robust 15% abv and an overall rusticity that makes it an ultimate accompaniment to all manner of grilled and roasted red meats. Its certainly ready to drink now, but will happily cellar for years to come, which should gladden you all the more when snapped up now at such a terrific price
What do the critics say?
"The 2018 Domaine Les Grands Bois Marc from neighbouring Rasteau is intense, dark and concentrated. At 15 per cent by volume, its big and bold for sure and slightly more robust and rustic than its similarly alcoholic sibling above. Its just about ready now but will last for ages and you'll be thankful you snapped it up (as I just have) when you did."
Jonathan Ray, The Spectator Magazine
“Consistently one of my favourite estates in the Southern Rhône. Les Grands Bois produces Côtes-du-Rhône that consistently over-perform their appellation and modest prices."
