Doran Vineyards, Chenin Blanc, Voor Paardeberg 2015

Western Cape

75cl bottle: £13.95

Case of 12 75cl bottles: £167.40

This Chenin Blanc is quite simply utterly delicious. It is a perfect new world white.

The dry land bush vineyards of Swartland ripen the grapes slowly, with very imited rainfall available, resulting in small bunches and berries. Grapes are harvested when the aromas are fully developed, resulting in a richer, riper style, then cooled overnight before it is destemmed and crushed, and left for 4 hours to obtain skin contact. After the wine has settled, it is racked into a selection of older 300L barrels for 30 days natural fermentation. The wine is left on the lees in the barrels until bottling 10 months later. The grapes are picked from old Swartland bushvines and the fruit flavours are abundantly clear with a delicious oak influence. This is Edwin Doran's showtime white wine and it is exceptional.

Irishman Edwin Doran first started visiting South Africa in the early 90’s when his successful school sports travel business ran their first rugby tour to Wynberg Boys High School. Head of the Wynberg governing body and father of the rugby captain, was André Badenhorst and the two men instantly found common ground over their shared love of rugby and wine. Owning a vineyard had been a dream of Edwin’s for many years and after his first meeting with André, it was clear that he had found the right person to help his dreams become reality. The farm itself, Far Horizons, is 179 hectares in the heart of one of South Africa’s most up-and-coming wine districts, Voor Paardeberg.
