Burgundy 2017
Burgundy 2017 Vintage Report
After the 2016 vintage produced the smallest yield since 1985, the 2017 vintage in Burgundy has been a welcome relief for merchants, customers and growers. Most have produced good volumes and the quality is brilliant with many believing this is the best white vintage since 2014.
After our trip to Burgundy in November 2018, it was clear that producers were overall very happy with the vintage. Vignerons from the Cote D'Or seemed to breath a sigh of relief after the most successful crop in 7 years. This was mainly due to their own preventative measures at the end of April where they burnt straw and hay bales in the early morning so as to protect the buds as the sun rose. The Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune also suffered the cold and dry start to the year though as spring developed, the weather was sunny and warm and flowering began on July 1st with the harvest starting around 9th September. The grapes generally were in good health with thick skins after the hot weather during the summer and having had no hail damage in this vintage. The cool nights produced delicious acidity, especially benefiting the whites.
Generally speaking, the 2017 vintage in Burgundy has produced 'open' and fruit forward wines and a near normal crop. Prices have also remained fair with some of our previous producers even maintaining last year's prices.
