Bordeaux 2018

2018 Bordeaux is a great vintage year, possibly a very great vintage year. The vintage was made by almost perfect growing conditions from July through to the end of the harvest in October – everyone was able to pick all their grapes at their optimum ripeness. It is year when some of the top Châteaux may have made the best wines they have ever made. At the more affordable end of the scale, there are a lot of simply superb wines which will give at least a decade of wonderful drinking – the old adage ‘buy the lesser wines in the great years’ more than holds true in 2018.

During this year’s Bordeaux en primeur in early April, we were quick to share the excitement among press members, winemakers and fellow merchants regarding the success of the 2018 vintage. The growing season started with rain and even a little hail, which meant that the soils on both the left and right bank retained good moisture. In some cases too much so which meant that mildew hit - Palmer, Carmes Haut Brion and Pontet Canet were among the victims. However, the Bordelaise breathed a sigh of relief when the long hot summer came as all the grape varieties ripened slowly and surely with a little bit more rain when needed most. This further lengthened the ripening of the grapes and harvest conditions were perfect. The worry was these ripe grapes may have meant more alcohol and we are pleased to say that most properties managed to balance these wines impeccably, indeed their balance and structure is what stood out most upon our tasting over the three days. We have of course only selected from those properties that achieved this balance.

Star appellations were Pauillac, Saint-Estephe, Margaux and Saint Julien so a great left bank year and the Saint-Émilion plâteau was highly praised by all with brilliant wines. Château Canon claimed that this was their best vintage for them over the 2015 and 2016.

When speaking to renowned Bordeaux winemaker and consultant for many of the top Chateaux, Michel Rolland, he explained to us that “across Bordeaux the wines are, on average, the same quality as the 2016s, but in a small number of cases the wines surpass even those superb quality levels”, he went on to say that he believed the quality of this vintage was at a level that both he and the Châteaux had never seen before. Head winemaker at Lafite echoed his sentiments when he suggested the 2018 may be one of the greatest Lafite wines ever. So in a word, a ‘Triumph’ is the 2018 Bordeaux vintage and a great success.

"it could turn out to be an all-time great, similar to 2010, 2009 and 1989 or even such classics as 1982 or 1959.” James Suckling

"Bordeaux 2018 will be remembered as an exceptional year, with no shortage of outstanding wines from this extraordinary vintage." Gavin Quinney

“Perhaps the closest we can come to a definition is 2009 meets 2016 on the Left Bank, and 1998 meets 2015 for the Right Bank.” Jane Anson, Decanter

"An exceptional year for Bordeaux wines…. Is 2018 a new benchmark for the region?" James Suckling
