Bordeaux En Primeur 2017

We returned from Bordeaux on 12th April having tasted about 400 wines from the 2017 vintage. Overall the wines exceeded our expectations and 2017 is a delightfully fresh year with good fruit, balance and structure. The vintage in Bordeaux will be long remembered for the frost in late-April which impacted many Châteaux, however after speaking with many of the producers, April was fortunately followed by a warm summer and rest of the growing season produced good concentrated fruit and delicious fresh and acidic wines throughout with great potential for ageing. Many have described 2017 as ‘heterogeneous’ which seems to fit the bill, Château Canon have made a delicious 2017 which they described as the best of the 2015 and 2016 vintages, while in other areas very sadly, the April frost damaged 100% of their crop, such was the case with our friends at Château Angludet. Allocations have of course been cut in many cases and as always with en primeur, stocks are limited.
