We have secured this excellent, mature blend of grapes at 30% below its normal selling price from this prodigious estate to establish this wine in the UK. Esterházy Estoras, Cuvée Rot 2016 is made with the indigenous Blaufränkisch grape, adding spice to the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. It is matured in new and used barriques for 12 months to add depth and complexity. This is the international red wine blend with Austrian character.


Our Tasting Notes

Deep ruby-garnet. On the nose intense fruit of cherries and ripe mulberries, accompanied by smart spices which bring to mind tobacco and liquorice. The oak is restrained and well-integrated. On the palate, fresh and elegant with moderate tannins. In general the wine is very well balanced, the style of this great vintage is perfectly represented.
A prime choice for hearty meat dishes (beef, game, lamb, duck), especially good with braised meats, fabulous with goulash and stuffed bell peppers.

The Princes Esterházy, who employed composer Haydn for 30 years, have made wine since the early 18th century and were one of the largest landowners in Europe until 1939. Both Empress Maria Theresa and Goethe were especially fond of Estoras wines and Haydn enjoyed them so much that he asked for his salary to be partly paid in wine. The label of their Grüner Veltliner Estoras 2010 bears the Golden Fleece, the highest chivalric order of the Burgundian kings and the Habsburg emperors, founded in 1430.
