Esterházy Estoras, Grüner Veltliner 2018

Grüner Veltliner has become an increasingly popular and delicious alternative to Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc and we think this is, with its great pedigree, one of the best. This lovely dry Grüner Veltliner, Austria’s finest grape, is made for the Princes Esterházy by chief winemaker Josef Pusch, one of Austria’s top oenologists, with France’s Stéphane Derenoncourt as consultant in the Burgenland, on the Hungarian Border.

Our Tasting Notes

Pale straw-yellow, on the nose fresh fruit such as pears and quinces, accompanied by spicy-peppery notes. On the palate lively acidity, medium bodied and a long finish. Prime example of Veltliner with good reserves.

The Esterházys, who employed Haydn for 30 years as court composer, have been making wine since the early 18th century and were one of the largest landowners in Europe until 1939. Both Empress Maria Theresa and Goethe were especially fond of Estoras wines and Haydn enjoyed them so much that he asked for his salary to be partly paid in wine.
Nowadays the Esterházy winery is an über modern affair, seamlessly combining heritage and tradition with up to date wine making know-how.

'I couldn’t resist the 2017 Esterházy Estoras Grüner Veltliner from Austria. I used to drink buckets of GV with my late godmother, the novelist and sometime contributor to this magazine, Sarah Gainham. I’ve never lost my taste for it. This example, produced for the Esterházy princes in Eisenstadt by the celebrated Joseph Pusch, is well up to snuff and my godmother — who single-handedly (apart from my occasional help) kept her local winzer Josef Pimpel in business — would have loved it. It’s crisp yet creamy with a whisper of pepper, spice and nuts, and is delectably food-friendly. It whisks me right back to happy days by the Danube.' Jonathan Ray - The Spectator (Previous Vintage)

"A totally aromatic, floral and rose-spiced nose makes for an unusually fragrant Grüner. The palate shows the same floral spiciness, edged with exotic lychee amidst peppery spice, sprightly lemon acid and Grüner's telltale phenolic edge. This packs in a whole lot of flavor. Make sure you savor every last nuance." - Wine Enthusiast, 91 Points (on a previous vintage)

"Despite the historical baggage, this wonderfully crisp, dry, rich but refreshing Grüner is actually very modern in style, with vivid, tangy acidity providing a framework for a palate of celery and pears. 90/100." - The Wine Gang (on a previous vintage)

"Grüner Veltliner is a grape variety growing in popularity. It’s a wonderful wine to serve by the glass, or as an aperitif with small eats. This example is dry but has an immediately appealing nose, with a distinctive nutty character." - Will Lyons, Wall Street Journal Europe (on a previous vintage)

"This grüner has masses of pizzazz. The aroma jumps out of the glass, the finish is spine-tingling and in between the wine glides across the palate like a speed-skater. It’s perfect for summer parties." - Matthew Jukes, Daily Mail (on a previous vintage)
