Sichel Sauternes 2016 (half bottle)
Upon pouring you are greeted with a very pure, light-golden hue in the glass with aromas of candied citrus with a hint of baked apple.
The palate achieves a lovely balance of sweetness and freshness, which I really enjoy with this style of wine, avoiding the cloying texture which can dominate in lesser examples.
There's sweet nectarine and candied apple even a touch of mango kept perfectly in check by a crisp, citrus 'zing' leading to a finish that is both sweet and refreshing.
This really is a very enjoyable wine, it's not super sweet, and is actually really versatile at the dinner table. We often refer to such wines as 'Pudding Wines' much to the annoyance of the winemakers, but there's no denying that this would be lovely served alongside a lighter, modestly sweet deserts, but served chilled, it really does make for a lovely, pleasingly different aperitif.
