Hartenberg Chardonnay, Stellenbosch 2017

Case of 12 75cl Bottles £14.95

Case of 12 75cl bottles: £179.40

This chardonnay is a Stellenbosch beauty which at long last replaces our South African favourite for many years - the Rustenberg Chardonnay. So many of our customers enjoyed this wine for many years and it has been a slight labour of love trying to replace it. After much searching, I found and tasted Hartenberg earlier in the year and instantly realised the wine is exquisite.

Hartenberg produces this chardonnay which is their bread and butter. The wine has been awarded 91 points by Neal Martin, 90 by James Suckling and 91 by Robert Parker.

The only downside is this is a parcel of just 10 cases - rest assured, we are doing all we can to get more. At £14.95, this is a real treasure. Oaked in French barrels and made by exceptional winemaker Carl Shultz, we are all overjoyed and quite frankly amazed that we can sell it at under £15 to you all.

Our Tasting Notes

Zesty lemon and lime aromas combined with creamy vanilla notes on the nose. Crisp acidity leads to a lingering palate with a subtle oak finish. Pair with creamy based foods, smoked chicken or duck, seared tuna with olive oil, lime juice and black pepper.

Since it was established in 1692 Hartenberg Estate has always had very high standards of winemaking. This reluctance to compromise must come with the terroir and for the current cellar master Carl Schultz, who has been at the farm for over 20 years now, only the best will do. The winery occupies its own valley in the Bottelary Hills in the Stellenbosch region. The Mediterranean climate, cool breezes channelled down the valley from the ocean and poor gravelly soils are perfect for grape growing. As a leading member of the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative in South Africa, Hartenberg have established various initiatives to protect the 170 hectares of natural wetland on the farm; to encourage the natural harmony and health in the vines and a sustainable future for the land. The Hartenberg social commitment is equally valued with sponsored crèche facilities and adult literacy classes provided for the 45 permanent cellar and vineyard staff.

The white wines at Hartenberg offer pure, clean fruit and are elegant and terroir-driven. Fermented sur lie and aged for 11 months in French oak (32% new), the Chardonnay has a wonderful vanilla, lemon/lime flavour with savoury complexity and goes unbelievably well with ceviche of salmon.
