La Réserve de Léoville-Barton, Saint-Julien 2016
La Réserve de Léoville-Barton is the 2nd wine of the imperious Château Léoville Barton, Saint-Julien's most famous (2nd growth) Château owned and run by Bordeaux’s Irish legend, the late Anthony Barton, who sadly died last year after handing over the estate to his very able daughter Lilian.
La Réserve 2016 is from a great vintage year and is blended to be drunk before Léoville Barton itself and is now within its drinking window, with another 10 years of life ahead of it. The wine is better described by James Sucking – see below – than myself. To me, it is a perfect claret - dark and brooding with rich fruit and a magical mineral underbelly.
"Coal smoke and dark, stony minerals create a dramatic, moody aura here, around spicy red berries and black cherries. The palate has great energy and verve with cocoa-dusted,wild berries and an immaculate, fresh and sleek finish. Second wine of Léoville Barton."
94/100 James Suckling
It is a very serious – and delicious wine.
