GSM, Vidal-Fleury 2021
Vidal-Fleury’s GSM is, in my opinion, a sensational, luscious Côtes-du-Rhône styled red. Then again, given their 250-years-plus experience of making wines among the great Rhône appellations, this is hardly surprising - particularly when these are great-value reds such as the new 2021 vintage of GSM. The 2021 is bright, light and packed with soft, enticing fruit flavours - strawberries, damsons and cherries, with an underlay of savory spices and gentle tannins. The blend is very traditional with 50% grenache, 30% syrah and 20% mourvèdre, perfeclty vinified by their winemaking team.
Founded in 1781, Vidal-Fleury is located in the midst of the Côte-Rôtie vineyards in the Northern Rhône, and is the oldest continuously operating wine producer in the Rhône Valley. Its also where a certain Etienne Guigal cut his teeth before setting up his own domaine. Jonathan Ray describes them as 'Rhône Royalty' and he is not wrong.

Delicious rich CdR. You can taste every sort of dark berry in it. Esme describes it as “light and bright”; I’ll give him “bright”, but I think you need to put some chill on it to get “light”, as (maybe this a result of drinking it on our hottest London day) it’s quite heady at room temperature. Mind you, I think many of the best wines from the Rhone want to be drunk at no more than a cold cellar temperature.
