Rioja Vega Reserva Magnum 2012 OWC

Magnum 150cl bottle: £29.95

Wine expected end of February/early March

Presented in beatiful individual wooden cases. Rioja Vega is one of the oldest wineries in this famous region and the only estate that is allowed to use the word Rioja in its name. This wine has two years ageing in American oak barrels, with 5% of the wine in French oak, followed by a minimum of twelve months’ bottle ageing prior to release. This is beautifully balanced and extraordinarily well put together.

Rioja Vega have been at the forefront of quality wine production in the region since they first set up 125 years ago. At the time, Phyolloxera was ravaging French vineyards and many winemakers fled to Northern Spain in a bid to change their fortunes. The founder of Vega Rioja, Felipe Ugalde, took full advantage of the influx of experienced wine makers and the estate has been gathering plaudits ever since.

"The 2010 Reserva, from a very good growing season, is mostly Tempranillo with some Graciano and Mazuelo aged for two years in American and French oak barrels. The effect of the American wood is quite obvious and intermingles with aromas of roasted sesame seeds, toasted bread, hints of balsam and incense and a core of rather simple fruit. The palate is polished and has tasty flavors, perhaps lacking a bit of mid-palate interest" Luis Gutierrez -
