Ronan by Clinet, Bordeaux 2014

A terrific Pomerol in all but name, from the iconic Château Clinet. Named after managing director Ronan Laborde and vinified by their renowned winemaking team, this pure Merlot is remarkably forward. A serious and delicious wine to be found on many top Paris restaurants' wine lists. A serious bargain.

Our Tasting Notes

Deep red ruby with a rich and powerful Merlot stewed fruit-driven nose. Great concentration, a long finish and drinking well already. Very well made, as you would expect from Château Clinet.

Under the guidance of luminary oenologist Michel Rolland, this small Pomerol estate has become one of the most highly regarded of right bank châteaux, further reinforced when Robert Parker awarded their 2009 vintage an extraordinary 100 points.
Despite being a rather modest looking 9-hectare estate, Château Clinet got off to an illustrious start. In the early 19th Century it was owned by the Arnaud family, the same family that owned Petrus, and these two wines were considered the stars of Pomerol. In the 1860s the Château’s fortunes turned, it was sold from family to family over a short period of time, inevitably resulting in a drop in quality.
Finally, in the mid 20th Century, the Clinet property came into the Audy family and it was under them that the Château began to re-emerge as a cult producer. Michel Rolland was brought in as the oenologist in 1985, and in 1989 and 1990 the estate produced what Robert Parker called “the incredible duo”. Since then the estate has gone from strength to strength.

“Château Clinet is one of the most revered names in Pomerol and its gérant is Ronan Laborde – a uniquely perceptive chap. My interest was piqued immeasurably by his recently released 2012 Ronan because I think it has the edge on every wine he has previously made... Made from 100% Merlot, this is a lovely, open, silky-smooth Claret with a touch of fresh, red fruit on the nose, a deep black cherry palate and a minty clean crunchy of tannin and acidity on the finish. This is a long, suave wine with lip-smacking acidity and controlled alcohol. It is also a total and utter bargain…” - Matthew Jukes on 2012 Vintage

"Made entirely from Merlot, the 2014 Ronan by Clinet is really very classy, from the same winemaking team who produce the celebrated grand vin of Ch. Clinet, one of the finest of all Pomerol estates. The fruit comes from just outside Pomerol and the wine is thus classified as AC Bordeaux rather than anything grander — and has a very approachable price tag as a result. Silky smooth and luscious with plenty of bramble fruit and a teasingly savoury finish, there’s still a touch of tannin here but nothing that a quick sluice into a jug or decanter won’t remedy."
