The Rhône is a treasure trove for high quality affordable reds, and our new Domaine Clavel 'Syrius' is a great example from Saint-Gervais - one of the best Côtes-du-Rhône Villages. So much so that we decided to buy it immediately after we all tasted it - a unanimous decision.
It is a blend of ripe syrah and grenache and is gloriously rich and jammy with a hint of sweetness and has a long lush finish. It is full bodied but not at all overpowering and is exactly what you would expect from a really good Côtes-du-Rhône Villages wine. 2018 was a very good vintage too - and the wine has benefitted from resting in bottle for the last three years before we shipped it a few weeks ago.

About the producer
Domaine Clavel is a family-owned winery which originated in 1640 and is located in the little-known village of Saint-Gervais, Southern Rhône. Winemaker Claire Clavel took over the business from her father Denis and planted 100 plots of vineyard covering five different sub-regions. The diversity of the terroirs allows the production of various styles from lighter and fruit-driven to richer, structured and aromatically complex wines.
