Pierre Janny Saint-Véran Merloix 2020
It is not surprising that Saint-Véran 2020 has become one of our top three best-selling wines this year. This has long been a favourite of mine, I always have great pleasure in opening and then drinking. Auberon Waugh wrote in The Spectator of Saint-Véran as great white burgundy on the cheap - we should all buy as much as we can. He was of course right. The Janny family's Saint-Véran was one of the very first wines sent to me in Scotland that I had spotted in the Guide Hachette when we were starting FromVineyardsDirect. When I tasted it I thought if we can offer wines of this quality, this will really work.
This latest release hails from a classic vintage and is one to drink, but also to keep. A first-class, creamy and rich white Burgundy lovely to drink lightly chilled as an aperitif or with pretty much any food.

"By sheer coincidence, I had splashed out on a bottle of 1er Cru Chassagne-Montrachet the evening before tasting this wine from further south in Burgundy. I could have bought nine of these for the price paid, and whilst I am in no way claiming this is of Chassagne 1er Cru standards, I have to say there were genuine similarities and the wines were not as far apart as those prices would suggest. Balanced, elegant, typical Saint-Véran, the touches of oatmeal and crushed almond over pristine white fruits move on to a gently honeyed palate, the racy acidity sharpening the finish after some sweet and luscious mid-palate fruit. A touch of stony minerality also adds to the subtle complexity." (previous review)

How does the wine taste?
A delicate wine with flowery aromas and citrus nuances. Lively and fruity on the palate, it is the perfect accompaniment for seafood and much else.
