At last we have found a superb dry Vouvray. Bernard Fouquet is the most respected wine maker in this famous appellation. His single vineyard Le Marigny is very special and what the best dry Chenin Blanc in Vouvray is all about. Bernard only produces small quantities of this impressive and expressive dry white wine. Great value for money here!

Our Tasting Notes

A delightfully fresh dry Chenin blanc with subtle apple and peach flavours. A beautifully balanced, rich wine where everything is in harmony. Quite delicious now and will age tastefully over the next 5 years. Perfect by itself or with seafood, fish in sauce, salads and white meat.

About

‘Vigneron de père en fils’ and one of the stars of Vouvray’s trained winemakers, Bernard is considered one of the leading lights of the appellation. Bernard vinifies nearly 30 hectares of Chenin parcelle by parcelle, carefully separating the grapes he grows on the argilo-calcaire ‘tuf’ limestone from those from the flintier slopes of the arrières côtes.
His vineyards are run to the sustainable rules of "lutte raisonnée", literally “reasoned fight” (in French), or “supervised control” (in English), a pragmatic approach to farming where chemical treatments are used only when absolutely necessary. Harvesting is 90% by hand in successive tris with just the base wines for the excellent bubbly being picked by machine.
Bernard is steadily moving away from the traditional demi-sec style to concentrate more and more on the dry Silex, Marigny and his new Petit Clos cuvées.
Using un-toasted 'white' oak chips during fermentation to boost the weight and complexity of the wines, Bernard also uses a partial malo to add breadth. Bottling for these cuvées is as early as possible - and in screw cap - so as to best retain the wines’ primary fruit aromas.
The single vineyard Le Marigny and the estate's beautifully balanced moelleux are fermented in 400L oak with around one third new each year, spending the spring and summer with their lees until bottling in September.

"Far more complex - almost Burgundian - is Vouvray Le Marigny Sec Barnard Fouquet 2016. The subtle nose suggests a bouquet of wildflowers and there is a great delicacy, but also power and length on the palate, with just a hint of oak from the barrel fermentation. Harry Eyres - Country Life
