Altos dOliva Gran Reserva 2013 with three years in oak and about six years in bottle (the minimum for Gran Reserva status requires five) is delightfully mature, and at only £9.45 per bottle, it puts many far more expensive Riojas to shame.

Altos dOliva comes from a small, many-generations family-run vineyard situated high in the Catalonian hills. It is a delicious blend of tempranillo, garnacha and cabernet sauvignon that more than deserves it Gran Reserva status. It is the perfect everyday drinking red for the winter, and indeed beyond. If we had a House Spanish red this would be it!

How does the wine taste? Customer Reviews (11)
A deep reddish purple with complex fruit aromas; rich yet fresh, with the red berry and mineral flavours that come from vines of a certain age.

have had this wine before and was pleasantly surprised that it is still available, from my point of view it has enough character to stand up to outdoor lunches at this time of year, which can often involve game and various levels of seasoning.the price this wine is due its origin is very good indeed that i should question the wisdom of encouraging others to buy.

I bought a case of this wine and repeated the order a year or so later. I only have one bottle left. It is an absolute steal: delicious, an old fashioned Catalonian winner of a wine.

wonderful, certainly lives up to its previous and critics reviews, will admit to have had a case before but alas it didnt survive as it lends itself to many red meat and game dishes at a very good price

Looking back through old emails I see that I first bought this wine in 2011. That was the 2000 for 7.95. The mystery for me is why I haven't bought more over the years. A well kept secret.

A deep garnet colour, tobacco box and cedar nose with plummy, blackberry fruit. Aging excellently.

I wish you wouldn't ask me to review wines. If I say they are good others will buy them and there will be none left for me to reorder. If I say they are bad you will not publish my review. For what it's worth, this Gran Reserva falls into the first category. Of course, there is a third category, namely those which I do not intend to sample for a further decade or so.

"Here's a wine from Catalunya in the northeast of Spain, where the Tempranillo and Grenache grapes local to the area are joined by Cabernet Sauvignon. You can think Gran Reserva Rioja as a reference point, this 2010 having spent eight years bottle age after a full three years in oak barrels. There is a soft brick colour on the rim, and the wine does show maturity, some autumnal dried leaf and more oxidative dried blood notes among the still bold berry fruits. The American oak adds its characteristic vanilla, spice and even a hint of mint. At £9.45 this will go down really well with lovers of old school Rioja in particular, the palate velvety and smooth with unruffled sweet fruit, though there is balance here too. Personally I'd be drinking this over the short term, but like many of the old school Riojas, it could also prove to be indestructible! "

"A tasty blend of Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Garnacha that has spent three years in oak and two in bottle before release. It seems suspiciously cheap tome (a Rioja Gran Reserva would be twice if not thrice the price) but it cut the mustard when I tasted it and I enjoyed its smooth, spicy dark fruit and long chewy finish."
Jonathan Ray, The Spectator (previous vintage)
