Despite the predominance of red wine production in the Rhône, many of its white winemaking traditions are ones we've long been shouting about, whilst marveling at how terrifically underrated they are. And at how supremely versatile they can be when pairing with food.
Viognier is the principal (glorious) grape here, often giving intense, exotic aromas and flavours of orange blossom, almond, pear, peach, apricot and pineapple. Although such aromas will often suggest a sweet wine, Rhône whites are more commonly rendered in a dry style. With rousanne, marsanne, grenache blanc, bourboulenc and clairette as other grapes typical to the Côtes-du-Rhône Blanc appellation, here are delicious wines of depth and substance and ones rarely requiring the cellaring a good white Burgundy will. Wines we will continue to shout about!
