Hautes-Côtes de Nuits, Domaine Lécheneaut 2019
Available En Primeur
A great way to unearth brilliant value in Burgundy is by buying the better-priced cuvées from great producers; here is a wine that exemplifies this perfectly. This Hautes-Côtes de Nuits from Domaine Léchéneaut is a joyful wine that in 2019 would beat many a lesser producer’s Nuits-St-Georges. It comes from vineyards higher up (hence 'Hautes') the slopes than the more prestigious premiers or grands crus, so is normally cooler and makes wines that usually have a little less power and structure. However, in a very warm vintage like 2019, the higher ground really comes into its own and gives us fantastic wines at compelling prices.
The force behind what is one of our favourite Domaines in the Côtes-de-Nuits is the brotherly duo of Philippe and Vincent Léchéneaut - once considered “modernists”, with the benefit of hindsight they now look much more like trail blazers who showed the way to many a young winemaker. Their care and attention in the vineyard, combined with very judicious use of whole bunch and a sensible oak ageing regime, yield expressive wines of superb intensity, purity and poise.
With global warming the cool terroir of Hautes-Côtes de Nuits is shining brighter every year. A case in point is Léchéneaut's bottling, with its almost fiery energy and palate packed-full of raspberry, black cherry and licorice flavours. Sappy and beautifully expressive, this is eminently drinkable now, and will remain so for the next 5 years at least. Delicious. Drink 2021-2026.
