Château Malaire 'Cuvée Grande Réserve', Médoc 2009
What’s behind the discovery of a jackpot, under-£20 claret? A beautifully drinking Médoc where one finds proper age in a stellar vintage offering irresistible value for money? Where a wine buyer strikes gold? In other words, what’s behind the discovery of this exceptional 2009 Château Malaire? This wine buyer will tell you.
It was in Paris a few months ago when Château Ramafort’s Managing Director Andrew McInnes insisted from the start that I blind-taste the Malaire ‘09. I did. Here was claret all right, but wow! what claret: showy, expressive, smart, stylish, very well made, with great balance and unquestionably in its sweet spot of maturity. Had I hit a jackpot?
Seeing my uncontained reaction (of inner joy), he then grilled me on the vintage. My brow furrowed: there was real warmth here, but the evident maturity of the cuvée led me further back than his superb and sunny 2015 Ramafort vintage.
Could this be 2009? Not only could it be but was. An historic vintage. Bingo – I ordered a parcel there and then. A parcel that is here and now, and one I cannot recommend more strongly that you snap at, and soon: such quality, maturity and value will soon sell out.
