Bourgogne Rouge, Domaine du Bicheron 2020
I visited the family behind Domaine de Bicheron's Macon-Péronne earlier this year. They make our best-selling white burgundy and we tasted through the range together when I was there. The 2020 Bourgogne Pinot Noir was an absolute standout, and my notes from the visit read “we MUST add this to the range”.
Really good, well-priced Bourgogne rouge is pretty hard to find, but Bicheron’s delivers quality and textbook pinot noir character in spades. We usually say it is a challenge to get lovely pinot under £20: this one is yours for just over £15, at least for this first shipment.
Made from 50 year old vines, the 2020 manages to combine exuberant red fruit with classic pinot perfume. Plush, polished and supple on the palate- so ripe, and very easy to drink. Eight months ageing in old oak barrels adds a note of spice to the sweetish berry fruits. Just the right amount of tannin, and a mouth-watering finish.
