2017 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Millandes, Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini
"The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Millandes 1er Cru matures in 30% new oak with 70% whole bunch fruit from the 70-yeor old vines, which is the source for the domoine's massal selection. This tends to be picked earlier than the other vineyard in order to obtain freshness. The bouquet is very refined and quite intense with black cherries, boysenberry and hints of liquorice lending on exotic note to the aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a little foursquare in style (reminding me of a mini-Latricieres!), but with fine grip on the finish. It will require three or four years in barrel."

From ancient vines of over 70 years old, 1er Cru Millandes is an enthralling offering from Heresztyn-Mazzini which offers a more brooding and backward expression of pinot noir. Intoxicating and broad on the nose, this is extremely bold and immediate, with lashings of crystallised black cherry and scented spice. This is an expressive Morey St Denis to enjoy over the next two decades. Bravo!
