When selecting just one wine to tell you about this week, this very old favourite of mine sprang to mind. It is made by the fifth generation of the Devillard family, and is one of the rather few French red burgundies at under £20 that I drink regularly with enormous pleasure. Too many, alas, are thin and disappointing.

The house red burgundy of Alain Ducasses great left bank Paris bistrot, Chez Allard always served en carafe, is a delicious Côteaux Bourguignons I have been drinking all my publishing life. Drinking Le Renard takes me back to the times where I designed the new format of the revived Everyman books on the Allard paper tablecloth with my printer in 1990.

How does the wine taste?
Lovely deep ruby colour with garnet tints.Aromas of summer berry, delicate peony and rose. On the palate, nice freshness with juicy red fruit flavours and fine, light body. Great harmony here.

What do the critics say (previous vintage)?
The 2019 Domaine Devillard 'Le Renard' is produced by the Devillard family (owners of Ch. de Chamirey in Mercurey and Domaine de Perdrix in Nuits-St-Georges) in the relatively new - well, decade-old - appellation of Coteaux Bourguignons. A low-yield, old vine blend of Pinot Noir and Gamay, it's full of luscious, juicy fruit and the softest of tannins and could hardly be more easygoing."
Jonathan Ray, The Spectator

"Typically for the Côteaux Bourguignons appellation, this is a blend of Pinot Noir and Gamay from a small family producer in the south of Burgundy, made with low yields and old vines. Moderately pale and translucent, the nose is so appealing, flirting with an herbaceous brightness but firm red fruit beneath: rose-hips, cranberries and raspberry, a delightful floral lift. In the mouth this is as caressing and soft as you like, tannins barely perceptible and the juiciness of the acidity allowing the free-flowing, featherweight but sweet berry fruit carry through to the finish. Not a profound red Burgundy it's true, but an absolutely charming one."
