Saint-Joseph 'Le Silice' Domaine Coursodon 2016
There's a beautifully dark garnet colour in the glass with with delicate aromas of sweet, dark fruit, star anise, and a warming herbaceous character.
The palate is just glorious, with sweet mulberry, dark cherry and black currant all vying for your attention. Then as the concentration ebbs away, a delicate layer of white pepper, spice and cedar are revealed, with a subtle, meaty, gamey character.
The tannins offer a full, mouth-coating grip, yet they remain so fine and precise, with an exceptional length to the finish.
There's a level of quality here which might suggest it's a wine destined to be held back and only served alongside fine cuisine. However, to my mind much of this wine's charm lies in its finesse and elegance making it an absolute pleasure to drink all on its own.
