Viognier, the very ancient grape variety introduced in the southern Rhône by the Romans (probably from Dalmatia) nearly died out in the 1960s because it requires so much skill in its winemaking. With hints of southern European fruits richer than white burgundy's chardonnay, Viognier is one of the greatest of white wine grapes, whose highest expression is Condrieu.
Yet for less than half the price of Condrieu, you can buy this Côtes du Rhône Viognier from our favourite family-owned, southern Rhône producer - Domaine Les Grands Bois.
