The grenache grape, garnacha in Spanish, originates in the early middle ages in the ancient mountainous kingdom of Aragón, before migrating in the 17th century to southern France. The Bodega San Gregorios Las Martas, grown at nearly 2000 feet in the beautiful Ribota valley and made from low yield vines planted in the 1940s and picked by hand, is a great new addition to our list.

A rich example of just how very good contemporary Spanish winemaking has become.

How does the wine taste? Customer Reviews (2)
This is a modern-style red made with old vine garnacha - warm, rich and flavourful with an appealing crunch. Very moreish and incredible value for money.

This punches way above its weight. Excellent value you can feel confident serving to lovers of quality red Bordeaux selling at 2 to 3 times the price.

"From Calatayud and vineyards at between 600 and 1000 metres altitude, this is Grenache from vines planted in the 1940s. There's a smokiness and dried rosemary and thyme character to this on the nose, very firm blue/black fruits and polished wood notes. In the mouth the expansive mouthfeel fills with blueberry and damson plum, edged with a liquorice and endive bittersweetness. That slightly herbal charcter adds another edge, as does the concentration, heft of 15.5% alcohol and powerful tannins and acidity."
Tom Cannvan (wine-pages.com) previous vintage
"A plush, flavorful garnacha with blue fruit, such as raspberries and blueberries, as well as orange peel. It's medium-to full-bodied with fine tannins and a fruity finish. Vivid."
